OPPORTUNITY-Medicine: "Italy-Africa Research Doctorates"
The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) recognizes the strategic importance of research and higher education on health issues in collaboration between Italy and Africa. To contribute to this activity, ISS promotes the "Italy-Africa Research Doctorates" initiative and, in collaboration with Sapienza University of Rome, annually finances two research doctorate positions for students of African nationality at the PhD Course Advances in infectious diseases, microbiology, legal medicine and public health sciences of Sapienza University of Rome. The coordination of the initiative in ISS is entrusted to the Department of Infectious Diseases (DMI). The objective of the initiative is, starting from 2024 and in similar calls in the subsequent years, to create a higher education path that contributes to promoting the new leadership of scientific research in Africa and that encourages collaborative research conducted in Italy and in Africa by young researchers from the two continents. To this aim, ISS researchers are invited to submit proposals for doctoral projects in basic, preclinical, clinical and operational research within the objectives of the PhD Course Advances in infectious diseases, microbiology, legal medicine and public health sciences in collaboration with a partner in Africa for the 41st cycle of PhD course (with start at the end of 2025). The selected projects will be carried out by an African student affiliated with the institution of the African partner, whom will be selected as part of the proposal preparation by the ISS proponent and the partner of the African institution. The African student associated with the project proposal must have obtained the title/qualification eligible for his/her enrolment in the PhD Course Advances in infectious diseases, microbiology, legal medicine and public health sciences within the six years preceding the deadline of the present call (Monday 31 st March, 2025).
ISS will award an ISS bursary to the African student associated with each winning project in the call. This will allow the African student the right to enrol of in the PhD course, as stipulated between ISS and Sapienza University of Rome in a specific agreement. The PhD project will have the shared supervision by the ISS proponent and the partner of the African institution.
