The BA Mourns the Passing of Prof. Magdy Nagy, One of the Founders of the Library's Information Technology Sector

With a heavy heart, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina mourns the loss of Prof. Magdy Nagy, Professor at the Department of Computer and Systems Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, and one of the founders of the Library’s Information Technology Sector, who passed away today, Tuesday, 22 July 2025.

Prof. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, on behalf of the Library's management and staff, extends his sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

It is worth mentioning that Prof. Nagy obtained his PhD from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, in 1974, where he worked as a lecturer for two years. He also served as an advisor to the Institute's Computer Center from 1974 to 1990.

During this period, he also worked as a consultant for a number of German companies. Locally, he provided his consulting expertise in a number of projects under the umbrella of Alexandria University and the Faculty of Engineering, including the design and implementation of digital systems for government agencies and public sector companies.

Since 1995, he had played a pivotal role in the development of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, overseeing the establishment and design of the Library's digital infrastructure and participating in the development of its information systems. He also led the Library's efforts in handling Arabic digital content on a number of flagship projects, which contributed to consolidating its position as a global digital institution.

In 2001, he was appointed Head of the Library's Information and Communications Technology Sector, a position he held until 2012.

The late Prof. Nagy was a member of the ACM and IEEE computing societies, in addition to his membership in a number of other scientific organizations. His research interests focused on operating systems and databases. Throughout his career, he published more than 80 research papers as an author or co-author.
