Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, opened this morning the “Memory of Modern Egypt Project” seminar at the Conference Center, in the presence of a select group of history professors and writers, as well as the family of Hussein Sirri Pasha, former Egyptian Prime Minister, and researchers involved in the Memory of Modern Egypt project.
The seminar witnessed the announcement of significant updates to the project, most notably the addition of a thousand new Egyptian personalities to the website and the display of a rare photo album of former Prime Minister Hussein Sirri Pasha, published for the first time, coinciding with the launch of a special issue of the Memory of Egypt magazine entitled “Parliaments and Representatives.”
In his opening speech, Dr. Ahmed Zayed said that interest in history and “collective memory” is not merely a return to the past, but rather a fundamental pillar for building identity and social cohesion, describing it as a “matter of national security” that protects society from falsification.
The seminar was presented by Dr. Sameh Fawzy, Senior Researcher at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and Supervisor of the Memory of Egypt project, who began his speech by stressing that the project represents a continuous model of cooperation between the various sectors of the Library, and aims to provide documented historical knowledge to the general public.
He also announced the project's latest achievement, which is the launch of the Encyclopedia of Major Egyptian Figures, which includes 1,000 figures from the 19th and 20th centuries.
A special issue of Memory of Egypt magazine entitled “Parliaments and Representatives” was launched during the seminar, which traces the development of the legislative institution and documents the biographies of certain prominent parliamentary figures, many of whom have not been written about since the Shura Council of Representatives in 1866 and the end of the 20th century.
