The BA Mourns the Loss of Prof. Ahmed Darwish

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina mourns the loss of academic and literary critic Prof. Ahmed Darwish, who passed away today, 4 March 2026. Dr. Ahmed Zayed, Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, on behalf of the Library management and staff, extends his sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

It is worth mentioning that the deceased was one of the most prominent professors of literary criticism in Egypt and the Arab world.

Prof. Ahmed Darwish obtained his PhD in Arts and Humanities from the Sorbonne University in 1982, specializing in literary criticism and comparative literature. He served as professor of rhetoric, literary criticism, and comparative literature at the Faculty of Dar El-Uloom, Cairo University.

He was member of the Cairo University Council and the Planning Committee of the Supreme Council of Universities, and rapporteur of the Committee for Literary, Critical, and Linguistic Studies at the Supreme Council of Culture.

He received a number of honors and awards, most notably the Nile Award in 2025 and the State Appreciation Award in Literature in 2009, in recognition of his distinguished scientific and intellectual contributions.

Prof. Darwish enriched the Arabic library with more than 40 books on poetry, rhetoric, and cultural heritage, most notably The Reception of Poetry, Text and Reception: A Dialogue with Modernist Criticism, The Construction of the Language of Poetry, Studies in Comparative Literary Criticism, and other significant works in the field of literature.
