Objective: This course aims to introduce the student to marine archeology and the role of the Mediterranean in the Hellenistic era.

Content: The Mediterranean was the first and most important link between the Hellenistic kingdoms. Ships were the means of transporting ideas, customs and religions, as well as transporting goods and entering wars. Hence, this course will present the economic, military and cultural role of the Mediterranean and maritime transportation in the Hellenistic era, which particularly witnessed several maritime conflicts between the Hellenistic kingdoms. The course will also deal with studying Alexandria's seaports and their relation to Lake Mariout and the Nile River as the most important water bodies in Egypt in the Ptolemaic period.
