Workshop: Philosophy in Late Antique Alexandria

The workshop “Philosophy in Late Antique Alexandria” consists of a series of four lectures shedding light on Alexandria’s contribution to the development of philosophy from the 1^st c. BE to the 6^th c. CE. In response to the materialism advocated by the Hellenistic schools (Stoicism, Epicureanism, Cynicism, Skepticism), Alexandrian philosophers break new ground by introducing a novel form of Platonism incorporating elements of Pythagoreanism and Aristotelianism.

Their approach, which was meant to become the dominant way of doing philosophy in Late Antiquity, stands at the background of all later philosophical developments in Arabic, Byzantine, and Western philosophy.
