The Debatable Relation between Islam and Science at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)

Alexandria- As part of the BA’s interest in different arts and sciences that enrich humanity and build bridges of communication and dialogue between different views, the BA Dialogue Forum Center will organize on Saturday, 8 July 2006 a seminar on Islam and Science: Religious Orthodoxy and the Battle for Rationality by Pervez Hoodbhoy, the Pakistani Writer. The seminar will include Dr. Mahmoud Hamdy Zaqzouq, Egypt’s Minister of Awqaf (Religious Endowments), Dr. Kadry Hafny, Professor of Psychology, Ain Shams University, and Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Khayal, Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Medicine, Al-Azhar University, and Rapporteur of the National Committee of Drugs at the Academy of Scientific Research.

The Supreme Council for Culture issued recently the translation of the book by Pervez Hoodbhoy, Professor of Nuclear Physics, translated by Dr. Mahmoud El-Khayal and forwarded by Dr. Abdus Salam, Nobel Laureate in Physics in 1979 and holder of 36 D.Sc. Honoris Cause from all over the world. The book was written in 12 chapters and was discussed in several seminars. The book tackles a very important issue, which is the relation between Islam and science raising queries on the scientific backwardness of the Islamic world, its backgrounds and dimensions.

The seminar will start at 19:00 hrs, at the West Hall, BA Conference Center.
