Eratosthenes Festivity 2011
Posted on
The BA Planetarium Science Center (PSC) will hold its annual Eratosthenes Festivity on 21 June 2011.
Eratosthenes Festivity is an annual tradition that takes place every year at the BA, Alexandria, and in Aswan. It is designed for preparatory and secondary school students, and includes a series of activities that revolve around Eratosthenes’ methodology in measuring the Earth’s circumference 2000 years ago.
On 21 June, the day of the summer solstice, the 21st century school students conduct Eratosthenes’ experiment at the BA Plaza and in Aswan (Upper Egypt) to measure the circumference of the Earth. Moreover, other countries around the world –for example France, Argentina, Spain and Bulgaria- will join the Festivity through videoconferencing to compare measurement results. The Festivity will also comprise fieldtrips, interactive workshops, lectures, and contests.
