Alexandria, 5 October 2005—The Bibliotheca Alexandrina, in collaboration with the Greek Delphic Association, the French Delphic Association and the Union of Asia Minor of Alexandria, is organizing an international poetry celebration, 9-11 October, entitled “KABAΦEIA (Kavafeia) 2005” in honor of one of the most prominent Greek poets, Constantine Cavafy.

The first day will feature a poetry recital and music, as well as the inauguration of the accompanying graphics exhibition by the artist, Robert Massin.

On Monday, 10 October, several roundtable discussions will be held about Cavafy and his heritage, and about Alexandria’s role in bringing poets together. The theatrical play “I, François Villon”, directed by Michel de Maulne, will be presented that evening.

The final day will explore poetry and song from the Mediterranean region with contributions from Egypt, France and Greece. It will also look into the interaction between poetry and cinema. The closing ceremony will be followed by the musical spectacle “Cabaret du Chat Noir”.

Among the eminent Egyptian, French and Greek poets and writers attending the celebration is Georges Moustaki, Alexandrian-born French singer, who will speak of his Alexandrian background and how it inspired his music and songs.
